What is SEO in 2026?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation: the art and science of getting your website discovered on Google (and other search engines) when someone searches for keywords related to your business.
Why does it matter?
- 🌍 Free traffic: Unlike Google Ads, you don't pay per click. Pay once, earn for years
- 🎯 High intent: People arriving via Google are already interested (unlike social media doomscrolling)
- 💪 Authority building: Ranking on Google = credibility with customers
- 📈 Compounding growth: More articles = more keywords = more traffic (snowball effect)
- 💸 Better ROI: Cost per lead via SEO is 1/3 of Google Ads in the long term
On-Page SEO: Optimising Your Pages
On-page SEO means optimising the elements of a page that Google (and visitors) see directly.
1. Title Tag (60 characters max)
The title that appears in Google results. It must contain:
- Primary keyword (ideally in positions 1–3)
- Benefit or modifier (e.g. "Guide", "How to", "2026")
- Brand name (optional, but recommended)
Example: "How to Build a Website | Complete Guide 2026"
2. Meta Description (140–155 characters)
The snippet below the Google title. It must:
- Include the keyword naturally
- Emotional hook or benefit (e.g. "Increase by 300%" or "Discover...")
- Call-to-action (e.g. "Read here")
Example: "Step-by-step guide on how to build a website in 2026. Discover platforms, costs, timelines and best practices. Read the complete guide."
3. H1 Tag (Only one per page!)
- Must match the title (or at minimum match the intent)
- Must be visible (not hidden)
- Must contain the primary keyword naturally
4. Content (300+ words minimum)
- First 100 words: Include primary keyword, set up context
- Structure: Paragraphs of 3–4 sentences each, easy to read
- Scannability: Use H2, H3 to break up content
5. Internal Links (3–5 per page)
Essential! Link to other pages on your site with keyword-rich anchor text:
❌ Wrong: "Click here for more information"
✅ Right: "Read the complete SEO guide"
6. Core Web Vitals (Speed and UX)
Google evaluates:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): <2.5 seconds (hero image)
- FID (First Input Delay): <100ms (responsiveness)
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): <0.1 (visual stability)
Optimisation: Compress images, minify CSS/JS, lazy load, global CDN
7. Mobile Responsiveness
In 2026, 75% of traffic is mobile. Pages that are not mobile-friendly rank poorly.
Tools: Google Mobile-Friendly Test, PageSpeed Insights
8. Image ALT Text
Every image must have:
❌ Wrong: <img src="image1.jpg" alt="image">
✅ Right: <img src="image1.jpg" alt="professional wordpress web development">
Technical SEO: Website Infrastructure
1. SSL Certificate (HTTPS)
- Mandatory. HTTP sites are penalised in rankings
- Let's Encrypt offers free certificates
2. XML Sitemap
- File that lists all pages on your site for Google
- Format:
sitemap.xmlin the root directory - Update lastmod when you modify a page
3. Robots.txt
- Tells Google which pages to crawl
- Example:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /admin
Disallow: /private
Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml
4. Canonical Tags
Tells Google which URL is the "canonical" version if you have duplicates:
<link rel="canonical" href="https://www.example.com/page">
Essential when you have: http/ and https, www and non-www, ?parameter variants
5. Schema Markup (JSON-LD)
Code that helps Google understand your content:
- Article schema: For blog posts (headline, author, datePublished)
- Product schema: For e-commerce (price, rating, availability)
- Organization schema: For homepage (name, logo, address)
- LocalBusiness schema: For local businesses (address, phone, hours)
Test: Google's Rich Results Test
Off-Page SEO: Link Building and Authority
What are Backlinks?
Links from other websites to yours. Google views them as "votes of trust" (authority votes).
Link Building Strategies 2026
1. Skyscraper Technique
- Find a competitor's top-ranking article (10k+ words)
- Create an even better version (12k+ words, more examples, screenshots)
- Contact sites that linked to the original competitor version (email outreach)
- Ask: "I saw you linked to [competitor post]. I've created an even more detailed version. Interested?"
- Success rate: 10–20% if executed well
2. Broken Link Reclamation
- Find industry sites linking to broken resources (404 errors)
- Create a similar (but better) resource on your site
- Email the webmaster: "I noticed you link to [broken resource]. I've created a better replacement here. Interested in linking to it?"
- Success rate: 20–30% (easier because you're solving a problem)
3. Local Business Directories
- Submit your site to local business directories (Google My Business, Yelp, Facebook)
- These automatically link to your site
- Effort: Low | Authority: Medium
4. Guest Posting
- Write an article for an industry site with a link to your site in the bio
- Choose sites with DA>30 (Domain Authority) where possible
- Typical: 0–2 guest posts/month (high effort — full-length article required)
SEO Content Marketing
The best link building is creating content so good that others link to it naturally.
Pillar Content Strategy
- Pillar article: Long article (3,000–5,000 words) covering a topic in full
- Cluster articles: Shorter articles (1,500–2,000 words) for each sub-topic
- Linking: Cluster articles link back to the pillar
- Effect: Google understands you are an "authority" on that topic
- Timeline: 3–6 months before seeing a significant ranking boost
Local SEO (For Location-Based Businesses)
If you have a local business (web agency in London, hairdresser in Manchester, etc.):
Essentials
- ✅ Google My Business (NAP: Name, Address, Phone consistent everywhere)
- ✅ Local citations (Yell, Yelp, local directories)
- ✅ Local schema markup (LocalBusiness)
- ✅ Location pages for each office
- ✅ Google Reviews (minimum 4.5 stars, 30+ reviews recommended)
